HS-390W Current Health Issues: Overcoming Suicide
In HS-390W I was able to write about many different subjects. One subject that stands out that I was able to write about was suicide. Suicide is one of the leading issues in The United States. I do not yet understand suicidal ideation, but I am continually educating myself with case studies and other reference material. I was able to research the contributing factors to many suicides and decipher what the connections are between cases of suicide. Researching such a sensitive subject was delicate and difficult to read about the disparities that lead to such events in a person’s life. Researching this subject has assisted me in providing care to the patients that I encounter in the ambulance. I have been involved in many situations inside and outside of work that have dealt with suicide. Writing about suicide has opened me up to break the stigma surrounding mental health and mental health solutions. I’m an advocate for seeking help whenever someone is having mental health problems. Writing and researching is a process that HS-390W assisted me in greatly, as I have never been the greatest at writing. I am now a proficient writer and researcher when it comes to healthcare subjects.
HS-390W Current Health Issues: Healthcare Delivery
I was able to research healthcare delivery methods in The United States and the barriers that the nation faces when it comes to healthcare delivery. Patients pay monthly health insurance fees to ensure that they will be covered when they need to go to the doctor, clinic, or hospital. Insurance providers cover thousands of patients, so they are able to negotiate with health care providers for reduced fees and then pay for services. Other companies have universal healthcare or government health care. This form of healthcare is taxed on the citizens of these countries. These citizens are not technically getting free healthcare but it is commonly more affordable. Writing about these issues assisted me in better understanding the issues that our country faces as far as healthcare delivery is concerned.
HS-313 Environmental Health: Research Paper
For this assignment, I was able to research the environmental causes of health disparities. For this particular research paper, I researched health disparities caused by the Flint Michigan water crisis. The residents of Flint, Michigan were victims of a water crisis where their drinking water was poisoned by lethal and less than lethal amounts of lead in the water. This incident led to the death of at least 12 people and the sickness and disease of hundreds. Researching and writing about this incident increased my awareness of environmental health risks that are present all around the nation. This research led me to research further EPA superfund sites around the country and better understand the effects that these environmental issues can have on a community. I can apply this information in my daily life as a paramedic as we do deal with environmental health issues from time to time including occupational health diseases and disparities. I have also gained knowledge and information regarding hazardous materials from this paper as I deal with hazardous materials in my everyday career. These hazardous materials can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed through the body and cause health issues that are irreversible.
