HS 200 Healthy Lifestyles: Service Learning Project

In Healthy Lifestyles, I had the chance to participate in the service-learning project. This project is designed to get students hands-on experience while volunteering to learn more about a certain subject. I chose to attend an Alanon meeting. Alanon is a support group for those suffering from the effects of addiction, such as those people that live with an alcoholic or are involved in any way with an addict. This was a life-changing experience as I have a family member that suffers from alcoholism which in turn has affected my life. This meeting gave me a new perspective that has since changed the way I understand alcoholism. Speaking with others that have been affected by addiction made me feel less alone knowing that the behaviors that I was seeing in this individual in my life were actually quite typical for a person suffering from addiction. I continue to go to Alanon meetings when I am struggling with this person and I’m very grateful that I had the opportunity to take HS 200 so that I could take part in the Service Learning Project. Without this assignment, I would probably have gone on to continually struggle to understand the behaviors and actions that are associated with alcoholism and addiction.

HS-317 Maternal Child and Sexual Health-Advocacy Assignment

In HS-317 I had the opportunity to advocate for the issue of child abuse and domestic abuse. This issue is necrotic in my response area and I have dealt with it more than once, so when given the opportunity to voice my experiences I was grateful to share my experiences as well as learn more about the subject in my research. I learned many new methods of dealing with these very sensitive situations. Often in the ambulance, my counterparts and I are the first to arrive on the scene with law enforcement. Detecting the issues can be the biggest battle as sometimes it is not immediately obvious that abuse has occurred, other times it is very obvious that abuse has occurred. These situations are an opportunity for health care workers to drastically change a child or abused person’s life. It is very rewarding to assist someone in escaping a dangerous situation so that they may live their life to the fullest. To be a part of that process is also very humbling as you see how difficult it can be for these victims to function after an abusive situation. I will continue to apply the skills that I learned from this assignment to my career so that I may better care for the patients that I encounter.

HS-317 Maternal Child and Sexual Health- Health Care Ethics Assignment

I had the opportunity in Maternal Child and Sexual Health to better understand Healthcare ethics and health equity. I was able to research professional practices of healthcare ethics so that I can better understand the mistakes that are made by healthcare professionals so that I may avoid making any mistakes myself. I also was able to understand the unethical aspects of our current healthcare system and what is being done to change these unfortunate aspects of the current healthcare delivery system. In learning the unfortunate aspects of the current healthcare delivery system I was able to read material that allows to up to look to the future to assist the nation in developing a healthcare system that is better suited to a growing nation with a growing lower-income class of individuals. This will assist me in my current job as a firefighter to provide better care to patients of different cultures and socioeconomic statuses. I believe that everyone is entitled to equal health care and their basic human rights should be met. Anything outside of this status is a failure of the humans around them and communities need to band together to end health disparities that can be treated.
